Why go small, when you can go teeny tiny? Not only are teacup dogs next level on the cuteness scale, they’re also compatible with many different lifestyles. Apartment or condo environments are palace-sized from the perspective of these mini dogs. Teacup breeds live their best life regardless of the living arrangement.

Be mindful when taking teacup dogs out into open green spaces, like city parks or hiking trails. Teacup dogs are prime targets for falcons or coyotes. It’s best to always keep your teacup close, on a leash or even in a backpack. These dogs love to be carried around.

Technically, teacup dogs are not recognized as an official breed category by the American Kennel Club, which categorizes the smallest dogs as “toy” breeds. These dogs are lifelong companions who never tire of a warm, welcoming lap. And you’ll spend many years doting on them as they have lifespans well into the double digits.

Top 10 Toy Dog Breeds according to the American Kennel Club

Poodle Puppy

1. Miniature Poodles

These clever and fast-learning dogs give an air of true glamour. They are obedience and flexible cohabitors that don’t take up much space. They also don’t do much shedding as they have a curly single layer coat, which can be classified as  hypoallergenic. Teacup poodles need regular grooming, but be sure to keep the length in the winter, as they’re sensitive to the cold.

Yorkshire Terrier

2. Yorkshire Terriers

Things are never dull with a teacup Yorkie around. These social creatures are happiest when they’re around humans. It’s not unusual to see these tiny dogs being carried around by their owners—they can fit in a bag or purse. Yorkshire Terriers make ideal pets since they can keep up with the fast-paced jetsetter because they’re so adaptable.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

This is an alert but even-tempered pup who is very flexible about living arrangements. Depending on their humans’ lifestyle, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can adapt to a high energy routine, or one that involves a lot of downtime. Regardless of the pace of their day to day living, you can always count on Cavs to be loyal companions.

Shih Tzu

4. Shih Tzu

Even though they were originally been bred for Chinese palace living, teacup Shih Tzus don’t need much space to roam. These lion-like dogs much prefer lounging with their humans, with loads of cuddles. Shih Tzus are also very patient and affectionate with children. Their head-turning mane means regular grooming is strongly recommended.

Pomeranians

5. Pomeranians

This tiny breed is small but sturdy in size. Their temperament can best be described as “full of beans” and they love being the centre of attention. Poms especially love being doted on—don’t hesitate to carry them around in a basket. They are regal creatures, once favoured by Queen Victoria.

Havanese

6. Havanese

Pug

7. Pugs

Pugs are blissful wherever they may be in the world, whether it’s the city or country, mansion or condo. They enjoy moderate exercise but really love lounging around with the crew. Be mindful of temperature with teacup Pugs. As with all flat-faced dogs, Pugs don’t do in heat or humidity, so use your air conditioning accordingly.

Chihuahua

8. Chihuahua

These tiny creatures pack the most personality per pound. Chihuahuas are a sassy and bold breed well-suited for living in small spaces. Loyal and loving, Chihuahuas make great guard dogs, as they tend to be wary of strangers.  Try not to fall too hard for their charm—or else these mini dogs will have you wrapped around their paws in no time.
